NEWPORT County AFC manager Michael Flynn is hoping to strengthen his squad before the transfer window shuts at 5pm this afternoon.

Goals from Padraig Amond and Ryan Haynes sealed a 2-0 win at Forest Green Rovers on Saturday and saw County move up to second in the League Two table.

But Flynn would still like to add one or two players today and he also hopes to move on a couple of players on loan or in permanent deals.

Asked about the likelihood of deals being done before the window closes, the Exiles boss said: “I’m trying, believe me. I’m on the phone morning, noon and night.

“I’m trying to get rid of a few players, which I think will kick-start their careers, and give them [others] valuable game-time that they need at the minute.

“And I’m trying to bring in players who I think will come in and strengthen the first XI.

“Hopefully I will. I don’t see any reason why not.

“We’re close to the end of the budget but if the right player comes available, I’ll try to twist their [the directors’] arms.”

South Wales Argus:

Flynn has made 12 summer signings so far but he has also lost striker Ade Azeez and defender Mickey Demetriou to long-term injuries.

Left-back George Nurse, midfielder Scot Bennett and striker Jamille Matt all missed the trip to The New Lawn.

And centre-back Mark O’Brien was taken off at half-time on Saturday due to a thigh problem.

“It’s unbelievable,” said Flynn. “It’s a bit frustrating at the minute because it might alter what I need to do by Monday. We’ll see.

“OB is not too bad; he just felt stiff and, fingers crossed, he’s alright for next week [at home to Port Vale].

“His thigh stiffened up and I can’t afford for him to be out for six weeks with a thigh strain so it was a precaution.

“Thankfully, he’s got a bit of common sense now and he’s acting professionally and he told us about it instead of trying to be the hero and risking it.

“The injuries have been frustrating but next week we should have Nursey back, Benno should be back, Jamille should be back – so we’ll be a lot healthier.”

County are also in action in the Leasing.com Trophy on Wednesday night, when they host West Ham United under-21s at Rodney Parade (kick-off 7.45pm).
