NEWPORT County AFC side have enjoyed plenty of success in the FA Cup over the past two years and manager Michael Flynn insists they are hungry for more.

Flynn’s men beat Leeds United to make the fourth round in 2018 and they went one better last season, dumping out Leicester City and Middlesbrough before bowing out against Premier League champions Manchester City in the fifth round in February.

County made millions in the process and Flynn and his players are determined to maintain their reputation as cup kings this season.

“Once you have a taste of it, you want more of it,” said the Exiles boss, whose side host Grimsby Town in tonight’s first-round replay at Rodney Parade.

“I want to be successful and so do my players.

“We’ve been successful in the cup, for a team of our stature, in the last two years and I want to do it again.

“With that comes the finances, but my first thought is being successful.”

South Wales Argus:

A trip to Isthmian League North Division side Maldon & Tiptree awaits the winners in the second round, but Flynn is not getting beyond beating the managerless Mariners, who parted company with boss Michael Jolley last week.

“We can’t manage what the expectation is outside our group,” he added.

“What we’ve done to teams could easily happen to us if we’re not on it.

“It’s going to be a difficult game. The manager has gone and that could be a bad thing for us.

“A couple of them might feel like they’ve got a fresh start.”

Striker Padraig Amond signed a new two-year deal at the weekend after coming off the bench to level from the penalty spot at Grimsby on November 9 and he could start against his former club tonight.

“It’s seven [FA Cup] rounds in a row now that he’s scored,” said the manager. “It’s an extraordinary stat and he keeps reminding me of it!”

South Wales Argus:

Amond, who has seven goals to his name so far this season, is hoping to nudge ahead of fellow forward Tristan Abrahams in the scoring stakes.

Abrahams’ hat-trick in the Leasing.com Trophy last week took his tally to eight.

“It doesn’t matter whether I score or not, as long as we win the game,” said Amond.

“I genuinely mean that, but I do want to score in every game.

“Tristan took his goals really well last week and he’s on eight now so I want to catch him up.

“It’s good to have that healthy competition. He’s been excellent since he’s come in and he’s always asking questions of me and Jamma [Jamille Matt].

“If we can help him in any way then we will.

“He’s going to have a very bright career and I hope he keeps scoring loads of goals, but I hope I catch him!”

Jolley’s assistant manager Anthony Limbrick is in charge of Grimsby on an interim basis for tonight’s tie, which will be shown live on BBC 2 Wales from 7.30pm (kick-off 7.45pm).
