NEWPORT County AFC manager Michael Flynn felt his side did enough to beat Leyton Orient but he admitted that they can’t keep giving the opposition a head start.

County were 1-0 down with just a minute on the clock when they allowed Ruel Sotiriou a free header from a free-kick.

Substitute Padraig Amond rescued a point with his 10th goal of the season eight minutes from the end, but Flynn is convinced that his side deserved the victory.

“There was only one team trying to win that football match and it was us,” said the Exiles boss.

“I’m fuming that we gave them the start that we gave them. There were so many things wrong with players switching off and giving them a free header.

“It’s so frustrating; you go through everything and do all your work and it’s just a bit of communication [that was missing].

“But after that there was only one team who tried to win this football match and the draw was the least we deserved because we were dominant throughout.

“We went to 4-1-1-4 at the end. I’m not here to lose football matches and I don’t like drawing to be perfectly honest.”

South Wales Argus:

County are still without a win in nine games in League Two but Flynn believes they are improving.

“Everybody has seen the players were all together,” he said.

“They all put in a massive shift as they did at Exeter.

“They worked their socks off and deserved more than that but they’ve got to be more professional in terms of identifying when things slightly change because you can give them all the instructions in the world but if things change they’ve got to be able to adapt on the pitch.”

Reflecting on Amond’s equaliser, Flynn said: “It was a great finish from him.

“I thought he should have had a shot when he squared it as well because he did really well. There were a lot of good players today but we gave them a sloppy goal again.

“I’ve just gone nuts in the changing room and read them the riot act because they’ve got to get back to being hard to score against.

“At the moment we aren’t too good in the final third but today was a lot better because we did create some opportunities.”

On a day when both clubs paid tribute to the late Justin Edinburgh, Orient’s interim head coach Ross Embleton was also disappointed that his side couldn’t claim all three points.

“We made a fantastic start but I was very disappointed that we didn’t build on our early goal,” said the man who helped Edinburgh guide Orient to promotion last season.

“We had some good moments here and there but I didn’t think we did enough to impose ourselves on the game and that’s something we’ve got to look at. But we would have taken a point before the game.

“It was a case of holding on in the second-half and from my perspective we’ve got to look at that as a positive. I said to the boys that they showed a lot of character to hang on in there.”
