MANAGER Michael Flynn admits the January transfer window will be a busy one for Newport County AFC with arrivals and departures at Rodney Parade.

County host Cheltenham Town in League Two on Wednesday as the window opens and, with the squad still hit hard by injuries and illness, he is looking to bring in some new recruits as soon as possible.

And the Exiles boss says there could well be more players following Keanu Marsh-Brown out of the door next month.

“It will be busy,” said Flynn. “Hopefully I can get in the players I want and there might be one or two [more] going out as well.

“Keanu left on good terms. Sometimes it doesn’t work out and just because a manager doesn’t play you, it doesn’t mean I don’t wish Keanu all the best.

“I’ve told him to keep in touch and I’m sure he’ll go and enjoy his football now. It’s new pastures for him and good luck to him.

“There was no deal done, it didn’t cost the club anything.”

Marsh-Brown saw his contract, which was due to expire next summer, terminated by mutual consent two days before Christmas.

The former Forest Green Rovers winger scored one goal in 24 appearances for the Exiles.

He represented Guyana in the Gold Cup in the USA earlier this year and is expected to join a club in the second-tier USL Championship in America in the new year.

Marsh-Brown said: "It's time to kick on for my new chapter in football. Nice break for Christmas with the family then back to it. New adventure, new home."

Former County target Joe Ledley could also be heading across the Atlantic after Charlton Athletic manager Lee Bowyer revealed that the Wales international will be leaving the Addicks.

“From what I understand he [Ledley] has got something lined up for February,” said Bowyer, who signed Ledley on a short-term deal earlier this month.

South Wales Argus:

Reflecting on Sunday’s 1-1 home draw with Leyton Orient, Flynn praised his players’ efforts and the support from the stands at Rodney Parade.

“The crowd were behind us all the way,” he said. “It was a very good turnout and, look, I know it hasn’t been great times lately but the crowd were fantastic.

“If the players look like they’re not putting a shift in and look like they can’t be bothered and they’re getting red cards, then you start thinking you’ve got problems.

“But they are battling hard. I thought they were excellent, in terms of the desire to keep going and going.”

Looking ahead to the New Year's Day clash with Cheltenham, Flynn said: “It’s going to be a good crowd again, but it will be a very tough game.

“I wish I had a couple more players back, if I’m honest, because then I could mix it up a little bit and freshen things up.

“Everything is against us at the minute with injuries and illness – we’re still without eight players.

“Lewis Collins finished the game the other day and he was complaining of backaches, headaches, being sick, he couldn’t sleep.

“So even when he comes on and starts to look bright, he’s ill.

“It’s possible he might have started [against Orient]. It would be ideal if we had a few wins under our belt and then you give him the opportunity to start.”
