MANAGER Michael Flynn wants his players to relish the challenge and enjoy the experience as Newport County AFC take on Millwall at The Den tomorrow afternoon.

There are 54 places between the hosts, who are seventh in the Championship, and County, who are down to 14th in League Two after a 10-game winless run in the league.

Flynn knows his team will be up against it when they take on Gary Rowett’s in-form Lions, but the Exiles have made a habit of upsetting the odds in the FA Cup over the past two years.

“It’s going to be tough but we’re going to give it our best shot and we’re going to enjoy it,” said the boss, who is aiming to take his side into the fourth round for the third year in a row.

“I’m looking forward to it; it’s a good opportunity to go to a Championship club and show what we can do.

“The players deserve it; they’ve earned the right to be in the third round of the FA Cup and to give their best against a very good Championship club.

“Millwall are in unbelievable form,” added Flynn. “We’ve had them watched a couple of times and Gary [Rowett] is doing a fantastic job there.

“It’s going to be very difficult. Hopefully they rest a few because it gives us the best opportunity of causing an upset.”

South Wales Argus:

County went to Championship challengers Middlesbrough in the fourth round last January and earned a replay with a 1-1 draw and Flynn says a similar result would be a big achievement for his side.

“We’ve got to go there and put in a really solid performance,” he said.

“If we can bring them back to Rodney Parade, that would be a great achievement and something for the home fans to look forward to. That would be a very good result for us.

“It will take a lot of hard work, togetherness and discipline and for all our players to have a good game and a few of them not to.”

Flynn must decide whether to recall striker Padraig Amond, who has scored in the last eight rounds of the FA Cup.

“If he’s selected, he’s got a chance [to extend that record],” he said.

“It’s a fantastic achievement and it’s great for Padraig to get all the accolades, but he’ll be the first to tell you that he couldn’t have done it without the boys behind him.”

The right-back position is a problem with Danny McNamara unavailable against his parent club and Dan Leadbitter still sidelined.

Robbie Willmott is also unlikely to be fit to return so academy product Dom Jefferies could get the nod to start in defence.

“There could be a chance for Dom,” said Flynn. “I’ve got no problem [with playing him]. If we feel that that’s the best way to go, then he’ll start. If not, he’ll be on the bench.”

There are also doubts over Mickey Demetriou and Joss Labadie, who were forced off against Cheltenham Town on New Year’s Day, but centre-backs Mark O’Brien and Kyle Howkins are available.

“I might not rush Kyle back [for this game] but he’s very close,” said Flynn. “We’ll have to see how Mickey and Mark are before we make a decision.”

Millwall manager Rowett has indicated that he will make some changes but he’s adamant that he values the cup.

“We want to win the game,” said the man who replaced Neil Harris in October. “I know the club has a fabulous tradition in the FA Cup.

“There's one or two players in that dressing room who I'm going to be forced to not start, the likes of Shaun Williams and Jed Wallace, who have played nearly every minute of every game since I arrived.

“On the other hand, there's some in there who are hungry to start.

“Sometimes you might have to take one or two gambles, but we're going to take the game as seriously as we can. We want to keep this good run going.”
