PADRAIG Amond insists he won’t be haunted by his miss against Millwall on Saturday and he believes it may be a good thing that he didn’t continue his remarkable FA Cup scoring run.

Amond had scored in eight successive rounds of the cup before the weekend and he wasted a golden chance to put Newport County AFC level with the Championship outfit just after half-time.

County went on to lose 3-0 at The Den, but the striker says he has no regrets and he’s proud of his achievement.

“I’m disappointed I missed but it’s not going to haunt me,” said Amond.

“It’s over now. I’m very proud of scoring in eight consecutive rounds, but maybe it’s a good thing that the record has gone now.

“When it all starts up again next season, the lads would have had to listen to it all again!

“As good as it has been, maybe it can be a little bit of a distraction to some people.”

The Exiles were backed by 877 fans in South London and Amond hopes to reward supporters’ faith over the coming weeks.

“The fans were excellent,” he said. “We could hear them throughout the game.

“They’ve had a great journey over the last few years [in the FA Cup], going to some magnificent stadiums against some big clubs.

“We’re disappointed that we didn’t give them anything to shout about, but they backed us again.

“Hopefully they can keep doing that in the league now, because it’s a big few weeks for us.”

South Wales Argus:

County are back in action tomorrow night when they host MK Dons in the Leasing.com Trophy (kick-off 7.30pm), a tie that will see Exiles academy graduate Regan Poole (above) return to Rodney Parade.

“I’m looking forward to it,” said Poole, who joined the Dons following his loan spell with County last season.

“It’s always nice to go back to where it all started [for me].

“Last season, when I went on loan there, we were really strong – I think we went 12 games unbeaten [at the end of the season] and most of them were at home.

“Everyone knows what it’s like to go there; it’s a tough place to go. They’ve had a dip in form but that doesn’t mean anything.”
