NEWPORT County will face Leicester City U21s at Rodney Parade in the quarter-finals of the Leasing.com Trophy on January 21.

County are just two wins away from another trip to Wembley after their 3-0 defeat of MK Dons on Tuesday night.

The Foxes made it into today's draw for the last eight after goals from George Hirst and Admiral Muskwe gave them a 2-1 win against League One side Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park.

After finishing top of Northern Group A with wins over Sunderland, Grimsby Town and Scunthorpe United, City’s youngsters beat Doncaster Rovers 3-0 at the Keepmoat Stadium in round two to set-up a tie against Micky Mellon’s men on the Wirral.

A kick-off time for the Leicester match is still to be confirmed, while the Exiles say ticket details will be announced soon.

Leicester’s U21s are the last of the Premier League academy sides left in the competition, which was won by Portsmouth in 2019.

Scunthorpe stand in Pompey’s way in the quarters this time around, with Newport’s opponents this Saturday making the long trip to Fratton Park the week after next.

Meanwhile, Exeter City host Graham Westley’s Stevenage and Accrington Stanley make the relatively short journey to Salford City.

“We’re into the last eight and we’re looking to progress in this tournament and hopefully get to the final,” said County defender Kyle Howkins after the midweek win at Rodney Parade.

“There’s a trophy up for grabs so we’re definitely pushing to get there and hopefully win it.

“I’ve never played at Wembley. It would be the first time, if we get there, so hopefully we do.”

Leasing.com Trophy quarter-final draw: Exeter City v Stevenage, Salford City v Accrington Stanley, Portsmouth v Scunthorpe United, Newport County v Leicester City U21.
