BOSS Michael Flynn believes the way his new signings have taken to life at Newport County “can only lead us in the right direction”.

Flynn hailed the starts made by transfer window arrivals Ashley Baker, Jordan Green, Dale Gorman and Billy Waters after County’s Rodney Parade downing of League Two leaders Swindon Town.

The impressive Baker played the full 90 minutes as Josh Sheehan and Jamille Matt goals gave the Exiles a 2-0 win, while fellow debutants Green, Gorman and Waters all came off the bench late on.

Commenting on the quartet who have put pen to paper, Flynn said: “You’ve seen the work rate, you’ve seen Jordan Green when he came on, the amount of pressing he did.

“You’ve seen Dale Gorman winning free-kicks, Ash Baker has settled in really well, and Billy Waters came on as well.

“There were four debuts for the boys. They’ve settled in really well, everybody’s buying into it, and it can only lead us in the right direction.”

When asked about Welshman Baker in particular, he added: “I thought he was very solid, even to the point where you don’t notice him out there because he just went about his business excellently.”

County will be in buoyant mood going into Tuesday night’s Leasing.com Trophy quarter-final against Leicester City U21s on home soil (kick-off 7pm).

Flynn got his tactics spot on as County did the double over Swindon, the hosts dealing far better with the difficult Rodney Parade playing surface.

“It was very solid,” said Flynn. “It wasn’t pretty, but I make no excuses for that. It was a very effective way of beating Swindon.

“We knew we had to swamp their box and, whatever way possible, we had to keep getting that ball in there. It worked because we scored two from it.

“It’s never too early to score on that pitch. The earlier the better because it’s so hard to play football on there and to create clear-cut opportunities.

“Whoever gets the first goal, nine times out of 10 they will win on there.”

On County having the edge physically, he continued: “I felt we won those battles, but Swindon are top of the league for a reason.

“They are the best team in the league, they’ve got some really good players, they’ve got a really good manager and they’ve got some injuries.

“Now, we all know what it’s like when you’ve got injuries, it’s not managers making excuses.

“It weakens your team, lowers performance levels, and Swindon are probably going through that.

“It’s what we’ve been through. We’ve got everybody back now and you can see that we are going in the right direction.

“You need a bit of momentum, but you need a fully fit squad.

“It doesn’t matter what club you’re at, if you have 10 out and five or six are starters, it’s going to affect you.

“It’s happened, you can’t do anything about it, just stick together and keep moving on.”
