CAPTAIN Joss Labadie would love to see Wales international Joe Ledley join Newport County AFC and he’s certain that the Wales international would be a “big asset” to the club.

Ledley has been training with County over the past few weeks and manager Michael Flynn is hoping to agree a deal with the 33-year-old.

It’s a move that would be welcomed by fellow midfielder Labadie and one that he believes would be a big boost as the Exiles chase a place in the League Two play-offs.

“He’s a quality player,” said the skipper. “He’s played at the highest level for club and country, so it’s good to have him in and around the place.

“Having him training with us can only improve all of us.

“His CV speaks for itself. He’s played at the top level and you can see in training how much quality he’s got. He’d be a big asset for us.”

Ledley would be Flynn’s fifth signing of the January window after the arrivals of Billy Waters, Dale Gorman, Ashley Baker and Jordan Green.

“We’ve got a lot of competition in there now and it’s made a few of us raise our game because you know that if you have one bad performance there is someone to come in and replace you,” said Labadie.

“So there’s a lot more pressure on the boys, but it seems to be working.

“Hopefully we can get something sorted [with Ledley] and have even more competition for places.”

South Wales Argus:

Cardiff-born Ledley is a free agent after the end of a short-term deal at Charlton Athletic and he recently told BBC Sport Wales that he would like to find a team close to home.

He also knows he needs regular games to force his way into Wales' Euro 2020 plans.

“Of course. I've said it from day one it's just the greatest honour of my career, playing for your country and [having] your nation behind you is the best feeling ever so we'll see what happens," said Ledley.

"I'll never rule it out and I'm sure the manager won't either but it's down to me now to find a club and play as many games as I can. My boy is two, he's into his football and he wants to watch me play for my country and at a club as well.

"There are options, but for me I'd like to be closer to home. I've been away – only for a month – and family comes first for me now," he added.

"Everyone's moved back to Cardiff for the first time in nine or 10 years so closer to home would be perfect, but for me it's coming up to the final year so I need to play as many games as I can."

Prior to joining Charlton, Ledley had not played a competitive game since August 2018 when he left Derby County.
