VICTORY in Tuesday’s Leasing.com Trophy quarter-final added another fixture to a hectic month, but midfielder Matty Dolan believes Newport County AFC can use the situation to their advantage.

The 1-0 home win over Leicester City under-21s means County will now host Salford City in the Trophy semi-final on Wednesday, February 19.

Michael Flynn’s men will therefore play nine games in the shortest month of the year with League Two fixtures at home to Cambridge United, Walsall, Bradford City and trips to Mansfield Town, Grimsby Town and Oldham Athletic still to come.

Asked about the fixture congestion, Dolan told iFollowExiles: “The lads love it.

“You can take the confidence from tonight, even [Saturday’s defeat at] Plymouth [when] I think we were probably hard done by, and the win [last week] against Macclesfield, it all builds momentum and as long as we keep performing we can put a run together.

“We’ll take it game by game and if we can keep the momentum and keep performing then I’m sure we’ll have a good February.”

South Wales Argus:

Dolan, who captained the side on Tuesday, was impressed with the way that the Leicester youngsters performed.

“I think they’re very good, all credit to them,” said the midfielder.

“I think if you look at the results they’ve had to get to where they are, they’ve had some real good scalps.

“We did our work on them, realised they are a very good side and I think they showed that second half, but I think we defended well.

“I think we played well in the first half. We were up against it in the second half, but we got the job done in the end.

“And it’s brilliant to see Leds (Dan Leadbitter) back and Kyle [Howkins] back properly and people who haven’t played as much,” added Dolan.

“It’s a great chance to put yourself in the manager's plans.”
