NEWPORT County AFC manager Michael Flynn says he’s not currently looking to bring in any free agents and he’s wished Joe Ledley well after the Wales international opted to move to Australia instead of Rodney Parade.

County, who travel north today ahead of tomorrow's League Two clash at Oldham Athletic, are still without a back-up goalkeeper or a recognised right-back due to long-term injuries to Nick Townsend, Ashley Baker and Dan Leadbitter.

Flynn has been targeting free agents to fill the gaps in his squad but, asked if there was any progress, he said: “Not at the minute. I’m not looking at the moment.”

The Exiles boss was also asked about Ledley, who had trained with the club for a number of weeks and been offered a contract before choosing to sign for Newcastle Jets in the Australian A-League.

“I’m pleased for Joe,” said Flynn. “He’s played in Wales, England and Scotland but he fancied playing abroad at some time.

“It would have been easy for him to play here and be close to home but you don’t want any regrets in your career.

“You’re a long time retired and if you look back and think ‘why didn’t I give that a go?’ it could leave a little bit of a sour taste in your mouth.

“So, fair play to him. He’s taken the plunge; he’s gone out there and I wish him luck.”

South Wales Argus:

County will be without Joss Labadie tomorrow as the captain begins a two-match ban after picking up his 10th booking of the League Two campaign during Tuesday’s defeat at Grimsby Town.

“He has been a big part of the team, but it gives someone else a chance to keep their place now and hold on to it until the end of the season,” said Flynn.

“We won without him last week [against Bradford City] and we’ve got more options now.

“We’ve tweaked it a little bit now and we’re playing more football.

“That allows the likes of Jordan [Green] and Otis [Khan] to come in, and Dale [Gorman] as well.

“We’ve got to try to find a formula that’s best for the team and for the players we’ve got.”

Ryan Inniss and Jamille Matt, who were both forced off on Tuesday, are in contention to start at Boundary Park.

“Ryan got a bang on the nose but he’s not too bad,” explained the manager.

“He just gets on with it. He’ll be available.

“Jamma was ill against Bradford and we thought he’d broken the back of it.

“He got through the game but on Sunday he was a little bit under the weather.

“He was a bit fresher on Monday but he was struggling once he started running on Tuesday.

“He was struggling breathing-wise and we had to take him off, but he is in contention this weekend.”

The return to fitness of George Nurse gives Flynn another dilemma as he’s only allowed to pick five loan players in his squad.

“Billy [Waters] was the unfortunate one on Tuesday,” he said.

“I spoke to him and he understands because the other five (Nurse, Inniss, Gorman, Khan and Green) were starting.

“He’s not going to like it, but he understands. He’s mature, he’s a very good pro.

“It’s my decision who I go with. It’s down to the boys who are involved to keep their place and to Billy to force his way back in.”
