Emma Wiggs paid tribute to coach Matt Lawrence after doing a medal double at the Paracanoe World Championships in Szeged.

Finishing second behind teammate Charlotte Henshaw in a time of 49.03 seconds, Wiggs secured a second medal in as many days, adding KL2 200m silver to VL2 200m gold.

It represents a remarkable turnaround for the 39-year-old after a year in which she has considered quitting the sport following troublesome rehabilitation from surgery on her right wrist.

“I’m really pleased,” she said. “I was disappointed with my race on Wednesday but this is my third 200 since June so I did better than Wednesday.

“Charlotte is a phenomenal competitor so to just be alongside her on the podium is brilliant but I’m over the moon to get a season’s best, that’s all I can ask for.

“I think we so far behind when we got back in the boat that it was about chipping away to get back to where we were. I’m chuffed to bits for Matt and all his hard work in trying to get me back to some sort of form.

“If you’ve offered me a gold and a silver a few months ago I would have bitten your hand off. I just want to put a stop on this year and build for next year now.”
